You're likely to know that the essay task is twice as important as the report task for the simple reason that it carries twice the marks. Despite that you still need to prepare for task 1 in the right way if you want to get your required score.

Many candidates make a fundamental mistake here. They concentrate almost entirely on the language of trends (the increase/decrease language). This is a mistake for at least 3 reasons:

trend language is only appropriate if you get a graph/chart based on time. If you have top describe a pie chart, a process or another graph with no time element that language doesn't apply
if you are looking at language to learn here. I would suggest that the language of comparison and contrast is even more fundamental - as in almost any task 1 you will need to compare and contrast. What you need to do is learn how to use a range of comparing structures: unless you do this, you are very likely to use the same "more than" structure each time. That is not going to impress the examiner.
most essentially, what you need to train for is how to analyse the graph/chart/diagram. This means learning to identify what are main features and what are necessary supporting details. If you do that, then you will be able to organise your report. This matters because this is a task largely of organisation and coherence.

Hi,

The IELTS requirement of my university is below:
" If you elect to take the IELTS rather than the TOEFL, the score achieved must equal 6.5; no minimum test area scores are required. "

I am a little bit confused. Would you please explain for me the meaning of this. Do I need to be at least 6.5 for each skill (that mean all the skills must be higher than 6.5) or I just need to get the average of 6.5 ?

Thank you very much.

Hello everyone;
I am considering to take the IELTS, as i have taken the TOEFL twice and i am really dissapointed with it. First time i got 113 out of 120, (r29,l28,s27,w29), and i just needed one more point for the speaking part, but Ontario college of teachers did not accept my scores.
Second time i got 104 (r27,l26,s29,w25)and i really practiced a lot and this time i did less on the writing part.
Ontario College of Teachers require total 103 (read24, listen 24, speak 28 and writ 28). They have one of the highest requirements!
I don;t know what the equivilant is to the Ielts, but i really wanted to ask you what do u think, is it better if i took the Ielts instead?

These are OCT  IELTS requirements:

The College requires proof of an overall score of at least 7 on the IELTS (academic test only), with scores of at least 6.5 in reading and listening and scores of at least 7 in writing and speaking.

I think the TOEFL is very demanding and too long! What are your experiences? i also want to hear from someone that had taken the TOEFL too and thier thoughts.

Thank you in advance;

Hi everyone!
I'm LeNoir (nickname), from Indonesia.
This is my first time posting something here because I usually downloaded something useful (e.g. ebooks) from this forum without giving any comments.. :D

I sat for the IELTS exam on Oct 8, 2009. I took the test because I'm required to get at least 7 overall band score in IELTS in order to be able to study in Canada. I was agonizing with my preparation because I knew that getting 7 in IELTS is not an easy thing.
I collected my result on Oct 21 and I was so surprised because I got more than 7 :)!
For each section:
Listening : 7.5
Reading : 8.5 :tup:
Writing : 7
Speaking: 7
Overall: 7.5

Personally, I was quite sure that I could get at least 7.5 for both Listening and Reading because they were so easy. I wish I could get 8 for the Listening but I couldn't because I made 6 mistakes :doh:. For the Reading part, I believe that I can get 8 because I was able to do the task only in 50 minutes. The reading passages were so comprehensible and I was familiar with the test format as well.

Thanks for those here who have shared the links of many IELTS preparation books. If you have questions, just feel free to ask me.

Cheers,
"Released by the Government today, it illustrates a rise in global average temperature of four degrees Centigrade by 2060, and as such represents a dramatic acceleration of previous forecasts made as recently as 2007 by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)."
