I'd like to ask fellow TMians to be the judges on this one:
Quote:
It appears to me this is the second time you twist the meaning of my words. And then perephraze just what I said to use it as a counterargument: http://www.urch.com/forums/showthrea...9&page=2&pp=15 (A Econ question) xeno: "...These are just different names people use to describe the same ..." scheng: "..plenty of "top researchers" disagree with one another" When people use different names for the same object, they in other words disagree on the name of the object, don't you think? This might be a gentle reminder to listen to what other people actually say, before judging them. While I agree my post was a bit laconic, I doubt it made anyone "feel stupid" if they read the words, but if it did - my sincere apologies, no offense was meant. ![]() Last edited by Erin : 03-27-2005 at 03:36 AM. Xeno, I understand your frustration, as I have myself time and again been misunderstood in forum and other electronic communications. I've said it a few times, but I suppose it bears repeating: it is exceedingly difficult to convey precisely and subtly in a forum (or email or IMs, for that matter) the full range of emotions and thoughts capable in even a simple telephone call. In situations like the one you described above, I prefer that our members chalk it up to the limits of this form of communication.
We are happily free of much of the conflict that marks many other forums, and dang if I won't do whatever I can to maintain our high level of civility here. I would ask that you kindly bring up these issues in the thread itself, or perhaps even by PM. I have seen scheng's posts, and I know that overall, s/he is tactful, thoughtful, and respectful. I should add that I found your post also quite tactful and respectful, and for that I would like to thank you. However, I don't think a forum is a good place to host a People's Court, as it were. Nor do I think many people would actually respond. I do not want to have to flex my administrative muscle by closing this thread right now, because I hope that the rest of this conversation will be civil and helpful. But if things become disagreeable, I may need to close the thread or simply delete it, but as I said, I prefer to do this only in extreme cases. I honestly feel confident that you could resolve these issues by PM; I've seen it happen many times here. I should also mention that I have edited out what appeared to be the name of the member in question, as I believe it's important to respect and protect the privacy of our members. Thanks for your understanding, Xeno. ![]() Last edited by Erin : 03-28-2005 at 01:01 AM. Reason: Made a little oopsy. :p |

Re: Judging the Judges
Well guys,
I sincerely could not follow the arguments provided by Xeno. Where is Scheng in the mentioned thread?? ( she is a real nice lady) But going by Erin's post i think i got some idea. Well Well, Erin is right. Use PM's, They are meant for personal communication and please sought out any differences of opinions if you guys have any. I agree with Brazilianwoman, regarding the civility of this forum. There are many reasons for this. First and foremost is that it is knowledge based community where each and every person parts with his knowledge for helping out others. Moreover this forum is well represented, so people don't take liberties against each other instead they show respect. Also Communication between persons is light hearted. I have seen other forums which are entertainment based or are full of persons of same country or religion. There people start flame wars and then mods have to step in to stop whole mess. Luckily this is not the case with this forum. Hey, Erin you are doing good job... and i hope the future mods( including Dingus) also do the same. Best of Luck. Chillout.

Smartness/Stupidness cannot be judged until you get to know each person in depth, and certainly it cannot be measured by test scores. Other factors, such as organization, perseverence, modesty, responsiveness, honesty, effort, kindness, sincereness, and overall spirit are by far more important in evaluating one's intelligence! - Econ |
