Copyright policy?

Is it against forum rules to not post excerpts from published books? Or just against forum rules to violate copyright laws?

Say I scan a question out of my barron's prep book and want other people to look at it and provide a solution. A previous poster was scolded for violating copyright laws, but i think this type of use falls under fair use because "the work is the subject of review or commentary" and does not "deprive the copyright owner of income or undermines a new or potential market for the copyrighted work" and "the amount of material copied is so small (or "de minimis") that the court permits it without even conducting a fair use analysis"

What do you think?

I'm not a lawyer, so I cannot answer this question. If I were pushed to answer, I'd be forced to say no.

I suspect that it's okay to post at least a part of the question if you want to discuss it, but the matter here is not whether it's legally justifiable, but whether the entity that owns the copyright will cause problems for us.

For what it's worth, I asked a GMAC (the organization that owns the GMAT) lawyer about this, and he hedged. So I have no answer.

According to my knowledge, if you want to copy the material for the use of academic purpose, the person who distributes that material must write a letter to request a permissionto from publisher, stating the length of time to distribute and from what page to what page you want to use that material. You must keep the response letter during the period of distributing the material. However, under any circumstance, material must not be distributed for making profits or income to the person who receives the permission.

I can't find the article at the moment but it was included in my course material when I studied in the program of Management Information Systems.
