Question Aid at Stanford University

Hi all!

I found this forum while searching some random admissions/fin. support info on the intenet. Seems a good place to exchane views and info.

I have recently been accepted at Stanford for the MS program in Construction Engineering and Management. However, I have no financial support, I'm told. Since, it will be a tough ask for me to pursue grad study without some kind of aid, I want to know what are the possible approaches I could try. I plan to mail one/more professor(s) regarding the possibility. I'm pretty sure that I could manage some aid after I go there, if that is possible.

Does any body have an idea how it works, whether it's easy to have a scholarship/TA/RA/part-time job after you land at Stanford?

I also have admits in the same program from Columbia (no aid), NCSU (aid decision awaited); had decided I could go only with financial support. But Stanford is a different case, I feel. I applied to 5 univs, CMU and Virginia Tech decisions are yet to come.

Any opinions and suggestions are will be helpful. Thanks in anticipation!

Re: Aid at Stanford University

I also got accepted at Stanford, to the Civil and Environmental Engineering department (for MS; I have PhD intentions). From what I understand, they essentially don't fund their Masters' grad students. However, once you get to the PhD level, they will fund you, but until then, you may be on your own.

I'm choosing to go to another school over Stanford. There's no point in going $xx,xxx in to debt when you can go to a school that's as good for free. I say unless you're really caught up in the Stanford name or rankings, go with another good program that will fund you.

Re: Aid at Stanford University

Stanford is a big school, and most people are able to get some sort of aid or the other. Even during the recessionary times, most lower ranked schools were dry in funds, but stanford rulezzzz.

P.S: I was told this by a friend of mine who did his PhD in stanford four years ago. You may need to ask more people!

Yeah, that's very true. But my trouble is I applied only to 5 univs (varied reasons), and suddenly I have three admits (Stanford, Columbia, NCSU, two decisions pending) and no aid at all. This sucks! Would be damn difficult for e to shell out all the $$. I do want to do that MS.

P.S.: In fact, I had applied to the Ph.D program, but I had been told already that fresh ugrads will only be considered for MS program in that speciality.

Re: Aid at Stanford University

same boat guys, I am going for MS in Management science and engineering at Stanford. My choices are Stanford and Columbia, with no aid from both
However 2 of my coworkers from Stanford says that once inside, most people are able to find something... you just have to walk and talk to lots of people...

Re: Aid at Stanford University

Many Congratulations first up, to all of you who have been admitted to Stanford. I will be very greatful if u any one of u can clarify my doubt regarding the bank loan.

During the course of mustering up finances for MS in Stanford, What is the amount of surety(in Cash or Assets) you need to show to Banks in India (I think all the banks must be pleading you to take Loan from them with such a paramount admit )

Or is there any option for students who will not be able to go to even places like Stanford with out some of kind of support?

Kindly clarify

Congratulations once again

Re: Aid at Stanford University

Welcome to the secret $$$ world of MS at Stanford. MS at stanford is the cash cow for Stanford (esp. engineering and CS) and they used the tuition to fund most PhD research. The logic is to build the brand with PhD and finance by MS.

For most other schools such as berkerley, MS won't make a profit and they will try to provide you with aid. This is also part of the reason why Stanford acceptance rate is so high compare to say Berkerley or MIT.
