My experience of Toefl IBT
Hi everyone
I just passed Toefl IBT, and would like to share my experience with you guys. I underestand that a lot if people are still frustrated, just like I was. I realy found this forum helpful while I was taking FPGEE; however, it was discouraging anytime that I logged in while I was taking Toefl IBT. It is very important to stay possitive, and keep trying. The last time that somebody posted something encouaging " I do not remember who it was" played as a turning point to my success. Let's break this monster with effort and hope. This is all you need. You need to practice everyday extensively. Start reading newspares, particulary the opinion and editirial pages. Be careful in picking up the author; there is a discription of the writer under each essay. Start writing down the unfamiliar words, and look them up a dictionary or thesaures. Have a plan, for example, work on vocabulary everyday, and write at least one essay similar to the test everyday... I also found it helpful reading long books regularly. Meanwhile you have to be commited to take the test several times. I always used to register for the test in advance. The next day after taking the test, I started to practice, ignoring the previous test. Finally, when I found out that I passed it, I was still studying for the next test which was supposed to be in two weeks. I also had regestered for the next two tests in advance, using every opportunity to pass it. Do not hesitate to take some basic writing and reading classes at the colleges. Do not give up. It requires energy and effort. Stop listening to the unsucceful people. I passed it, so you can do it too. I hope this helps. Just keep trying. Good luck to all who are still waiting. |

By the time I was struggling for Toefl Ibt, I was also expecting a baby. It was not easy taking classes, and carrying my books everyday to school with my heavy weight. I also was working as a part time technician, while being a mother of two small children. Still nothing could stop my goal, which was passing this test. Guys, life might be challenging, but if you realy plan, you can make it. Stay possitive. Dissapointment kills your motivation, and prevents you from acheiving your goals. I hope everyrbody else listens to my story, and succeed. Good luck to all. You can do it.

I would also like to share my TOEFL iBT experience. I took it in my home country Malaysia before I came to US. The experience wasn't that bad. I'm not a native English speaker like most of you.
For Reading/Listening, I guess most of us do not have much problems in getting the NABP required score. For Writing, I scored 30 - I did not use many bombastic vocabularies but instead I ensured that the grammar was correct. Formulate your essay in organized paragraphs and make clear your points. I think thats all it counts. For speaking which most people are struggling with, I scored right on the dot 26 which quite surprised me. Just try to speak clearly and make your points clear. You might not want to include too many hesitations as that will take up your time. The questions weren't too difficult but it just required fast thinking - think quick and scribble the main points then start talking. I'm sure most of you have been in the US for quite time, keep practicing on your daily communication. If a person like me who does not communicate daily in English can pass, I'm sure you can pass too. By the way, I did read TOEFL's official guide book and KAPLAN before sitting for the test. It gave me an idea what to expect. It helped, for me. Good luck everyone! Last edited by vvfong : 2009 October 17th at 08:42 PM. |
