"The rating system for electronic games is similar to the movie rating system in that it provides consumers with a quick reference so that they can determine if the subject matter and contents are appropriate. This electronic game rating system is not working because it is self regulated and the fines for violating the rating system are nominal. As a result an independent body should oversee the game industry and companies that knowingly violate the rating system should be prohibited from releasing a game for two years."

YOUR RESPONSE: The argument that an independent body which will look into matter of electronic game rating system will give desired results is not convincing, since it ignores certain assumptipons.

 

First, the argument assumes that the independent body will come to know any modification done in rating system by any gaming industry without having any control on whole process of rating system.

As long as entire process of rating system is under control of respective gaming industry, the regulatory body will never come to know who is doing what kind of modification in rating system to serve its respective business greeds.

 

Second, the argument never explains what kinds of parameters the independent body will use to judge or scrutinise proper working of rating system. Does it suggest to incorporate some improvement in current rating sytem to reflect more user preference for particular gaming products if it lacks now ?? It may be that the existing rating system is inefficient so any regulating this sytem will not help much in wider sense.

 

Finally, the argument states that the independent body will only oversee into the gaming companies which violate the rating system. It doesnot take into account all gaming industries. So, who does make sure that the a particular gaming company which does not violate rule this year will no violate rule next year. So, Independdent body has to consider all gaming inductries and companies to make regulation process applicable to all to avoid any new companies making violating rule.

 

Thus the argument is not convincing to bring correct game rating system. ultimately, the argument might have been strengthened by if it considers all gaming industries under its regulation. If possible, if it controls the game rating sytems for all respective companies then any modification in rating would highly be minimised inspite of 2 yr punishment is huge for a company.
