The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:“The inflow of immigrant workers into our community has put a downward pressure on wages. In fact, the average compensation of unskilled labor in our city has declined by nearly 10% over the past 5 years. Therefore, to protect our local economy, it is essential to impose a moratorium on further immigration.” Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound. my RESPONSE: In this argument the editor of the local newspaper states that it is essential to impose a moratorium on further immigration. However ther editor's argument rests on numerous unproven and dubious assumptions-about the adequacy of evidence-about the impact of immigrant workers-about the protection of local economy. Thus the argument is unconvincing, as it stated below. To begin with, the editor's argument rests on two unsubstantiated assumptions. One such assumption is about the adequacy of evidence. In the argument it is stated that the average compensation of unskilled labor in the city has declined by nearly 10% over the past 5 years. There is no stated evidence in the argument that the immigrant workers are unskilled workers; otherwise it is equally possible that the immigrant workers who came to the city for work are all skilled workers. The second assumption is that to protect the local economy, it is essential to impose a moratorium on further immigration. In the argument there is no such evidence that imposing a moratorium on further immigration will protect the economy. While it is equally possible that imposing a moratorium doesn't have any effect on the local economy. Another problem with the argument is that the immigrant workers put a downward pressure on wages. If we assume that due to immigrant workers itself the wages of the unskilled labor are nearly declined to 10% over the past 5 years. Then it is also possible that due to lack of sufficient labor in the city the factories running in the city may be closed and shifted to other city. Consequently so many of the workers may lost their jobs resulting in greater decline in wages than the one stated in the argument. In sum, the editor's argument is very weak. However the argument may be strengthened by providing the firm evidence about the effect of immigrant workers on , imposing a moratorium in the nearby city, their nature of work etc., |
