Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic regions. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of the year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the purported decline in deer populations is the result of the deer's being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

The author claims that there has been a decline in the population of Arctic deer due to their inability to migrate between islands to search for food, since the ice which used to cover the sea separating the islands is getting melted. And assumes that the most obvious reason for ice melting is global warming. However there seems to be a number of unproved assumptions and more evidences need to be provided to clarify the matter.Firstly, information regarding plants on which these Arctic deers survive and other creatures inhabiting there needs to be mentioned.

Proper evidence showing abundant food in different islands has to be provided.Since,It could be possible that due to some catastrophe or some conflagration, the flora of the region got destroyed, desolating the place. And that why even after perambulating from one island to another ,they are starving due to meagre food.Data reflecting fauna of the region is also precious to determine if the declination in the arctic deer is due to the attack by other carnivorous animals. Lack of food or presence of dangerous animals would only weaken author’s claim of declination in Arctic Deers due to melting of ice.

The author states that local hunters are reporting that there has been a decline in Arctic Deer. However authorities must carry out investigations to ascertain the exact reason for the declination . And proper data from Government Department needs to be submitted . Since,it could be possible that main cause of the death of these animals is by hunting and poaching activities .It might be the case that the local hunters are most guilty and are now making up apocryphal stories to deceive public in order to conceal their crime or to carry out more such grisly acts in future.

The author implies that global warming has resulted in the rapid melting of the ice ,which has hindered Arctic Deer to cross over the sea and reach neighboring islands for food.Obviously global warming is ravaging our environment and affecting flora and fauna of the region ,and has also caused melting of ice and thereby an increase in sea level. However, there needs to be information regarding the extent to which Canada’s Arctic region is affected by global warming. It may be possible that there is not much scathing impact of global warming in that region. In that case ,it would weaken the argument.

Thus , unless proper evidence on certain matters are not furnished ,the argument would not hold strong.
