In business courses, professors should teach only factual information and skills, not ethics."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your experience, observations or reading.

Whether professors should teach only factual information and skill and not impart business ethics to his or her students? - is a queston that has gained prominence in the last decade with a spate of scandals at the backdrop. This is a question that bears utmost relevance to todays corporate houses. Businesses always have a indirect bearing on the society and it is very necessary that students who study business management not only equip themselves with necessary business skils but also learn to give their skills direction by learning business values.Any organization is made up of individuals and an ethically sound indivduals creates an organization with good business values.

Are business values necessary for an organization? One must understand that every business is part of an intricate web called society, when each one is inter-dependent on the other, the society by itself is one large organization. For the smooth running of a society it should always be deep rooted in an intrinsic value system and as business represent a small fragment of such a socity it is necessary that they too follow the same value culture. In the last decade United States has been witnessed too many stock market crashes , most of them resulting due to scandals within large organizations. Two recent cases would be the Enron scam and the WorldCom scam. Such organizations do not parade any social consciousness and are more of a liability to the society, their misdemeanour has rendered them bankrupt.

Product quality has been a high pitch marketing jargon in the last few decades. Every organization has been trying to ensure that what ever it manufactures is of the highest quality. A few organizations have even been socially conscious to recall products that might prove to be vulnerable to the customer. Recently product recalls were carried out my Nokia, Sony and Ford, they are all large organization that have stood the test of time because of their ethical grounding.Recalling a product might prove to be antithetical to an organizations main motive - making profit, but corporates that have held their self-image as "socially conscious" have always been sought after by customers.

Most organization in the lure to make big profits are blinded by the need to be socially conscious. Though in the short run it might help them achieve their immideate goals,in the long run their actions would proved to be detrimental to their existence. Thus it is utmost necessary that students learn ethics in business schools and thereby give their knowledge and skills proper direction.
