131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
As far as I know, arts are the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. The arts encompass a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression. I agree with the speaker’s broad assertion that the arts reveal otherwise the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Arts not only express the beauty of life, but also reveal the deeper thoughts and impulses of a society. Yet strictly followed, the arts are not only to reveal the otherwise hidden spirits but also to reveal the artists’ personal insights. . Generally, Arts have been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. Arts are often the expressions of the views and emotion of artists who often have more profound and special sights to the society than the common. For example, Liberty Leading the People is a famous painting commemorating the July Revolution of 1830,the painter once wrote in a letter “if I haven’t fought for my country at least I’ll paint for her.”The painter used his brush to support the revolution, and this paint reveals the impulse of a society that everyone had a strong thirst for freedom of that period. Maybe the initial function of arts is to provide pleasure,as time goes by,arts are trend to be made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions. So a part of arts’ purpose is to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Leo Tolstoy identified art as a use of indirect means to communicate from one person to another.Arts are indirect means to express the artists’ weltanschauung to others. For example,War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy is considered one of the world's greatest novels which has a huge cast and momentous themes: history and the role of the individual, mighty or insignificant, love and marriage, the pros and cons of acting in accordance with convention, and death. His weltanschauung reflects the the otherwise hidden ideas of a society that bogged down in war. Admittedly, the internal world of the individuals reflects the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, and arts are the collection of wisdom of human beings and can reflect the internal world of individuals. The creativity and the personal insight of the artists can not be neglected unfairly. For instance,The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh depicts the view outside his sanitarium room window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day,in his dream the stars wave their hands to him.The famous paint show the incredible creativity and his personal perception of the nature. To sum up,while enjoying the arts,we should notice the hidden ideas and impulses of a society revealed by them; at the same time, we should not lose our sight of the creativity and personal charm of the artist. thx ![]() |
