Assumption question - Price support for dairy products

While price supports for dairy products will save jobs in the dairy industry, they will also endanger jobs in other food industries. Because price supports will make dairy products more expensive, families will spend a greater portion of their food budgets on dairy products.

The author's argument depends on which of the following premises ?

    (A) Most consumers would not prefer lower-priced dairy products to other lower-priced food items.
    (B) If dairy price supports are implemented, there will be an increase in the number of jobs in the dairy industry.
    (C) Consumers would spend more money on other types of food if there were no dairy price supports.
    (D) If price supports for other food products were implemented, sales of those products would decline.
    (E) The quantity of dairy products sold will decrease if price supports are implemented.

Please explain why you come to your choice.

    IMO its C.

Its mentioned in the last statement of the argument that because of price supports the consumers are spending greater portion of their food budget on on dairy products.Hence the author is assuming that if the price support was absent then the consumers would have spent the extra amount on other food products.

    HTH.

    I go with C.

Negate C . It implies that even if in the absence of price supports customers would not spend more money on other products

C it is. Only C helps fill the gap between buying food and buying dairy products.
