IMO A
Heavy > 2 Moderate 1-2 Light 0-1 if (no of days with moderate rainfall is less && no of days with light rainfall is less ) BUT total rainfall is higher Options are no of days of Heavy rainfall is high(which is not any of the choices) OR Whenever it rained Moderate or Light it rained more ie. if it rained 0.1 inch in 1910 it rained 0.9 inch in 1990 but both quantities are categorised to be light rainfall. |

IMO D
A, B & C are out as we know the number of days of light and moderate rainfall in 1990 < 1910 However, the total rainfall in 1990 >1990 This is possible if - we have more heavy rainfall days in 1990 than we have in 1910 - if the rainfall inch per day in 1990 > 1910 despite the number of days being less example - moderate rainfall in 1990 (2days) 2 inch, 2 inch = 4 inch 1910 (3days) 1.1 inch, 1.1 inch, 1.1 inch = 3.3 inch Though the number of days of rainfall in 1910 is more than number of days in 1990 but the rainfall in 1990 is more than 1910. Hope this helps.. what is OA? |

Quote:
D. the total number of inches of rain that fell on days with moderate rainfall in 1990 was more than twice what it had been in 1910 It is not the question if the total amount of moderate rainfall in 1990 is bigger than the figure for 1910. D answer choice says that total amount of moderate rainfall in 1990 is more than DOUBLE the figure for 1910 D is not correct |

Hi finesa17,
You hv taken some arbitrary values and tried to prove that "D" is wrong. But the question says "it is also possible that..." and NOT "it is also TRUE that...". So correct-choice need not be EXACTLY SUPPORTED by the passage, but must hv atleast some support from the passage. Of the given, "D" is the most-possible inference. What friends, do you agree with my point? |

Please re-read this portion :
"In 1990, there were fewer days with light rainfall than in 1910 and fewer with moderate rainfall (fewer than what-days with light rainfall in 1990 or fewer days than moderate ranfall in 1910 otherwise would have been specifically stated), yet total rainfall for the year was 20 percent higher in 1990 than in 1910." before taking arbitrary values first check what are the valid comparisons I think D makes sense What's the OA?
