When the sun is shining and the wind-chill factor is below zero Susan wears her parka. Whenever it is raining and the wind-chill factor is above zero Susan wears her raincoat. Sometimes it rains when the sun is shining

If the above statements are true which of the following must also be true?

    (A) If it is not raining and Susan is wearing her parka the sun is shining.

    (B) If the wind-chill factor is below zero and Susan is not wearing her parka the sun is not shining

    (C) If the wind-chill factor is below zero and it is not raining Susan is wearing her parka

    (D) If the wind-chill factor is below zero and it is raining Susan is wearing her raincoat

    (E) If it rains while the sun shines and the wind-chill factor is zero Susan wears her parka.

This question is from the first test of crack-gmat. Do we get such type of questions in actual GMAT?

    Thank You

    Hi 2gethervdo
This seems to be more like an LSAT question than a GMAT question.
Chances are low that you may get one like this on an actual GMAT.
That said, if you are a high scorer in Verbal,ETS can give you similar difficult questions to test your nerve. !!

    Now for curiosity...Is the ans B ??

    Yes, Your answer is correct!
    Here is the explanation:

    Explanation
If the wind chill factor is below zero and Susan is wearing her parka the sun should shine but since Susan is not wearing her parka the sun shouldn’t be shining.

Hence (B) is the correct answer.

Is there any specific method for solving these type of questions?? Like a Venn diagram method or something similar...

    Thank You

    Hi 2gethervdo
I usually try to break down the argument into understandable parts.

For ex in our case we know that
    Susan will wear her parka when two conditions are met;
    a)sun is shining
    b) wind-chill factor < 0

It follows that if Susan is not wearing parka, then atleast one of
'a' or 'b' is not being met.Since the option B says that 'b' is met
we can conclude that 'a' is not being met.

I think, this kinda problems can be tackled using venn diagrams.

I agree that this one is more of the LSAT quality - luckily, we are not those guys who have to pass through this test. )

Anyway, as for the solution, it relates to deductive logic. The rules are as follows:

If A then B (usually it is given in the statement and you need to find what happens if anything occurs either to A or to B).

IF NOT A, then NOT B.

IF not B, then not A - INCORRECT!!!!

Here we have the same logic:

If shines (A) and factor <0 (C), she wears (B)
If she doesn't wear (not B) and factor<0 (not C), then sun is not shining (NOT A).

If you apply this logic, you will be safe solving these kinds of problems.
