1000CR Set 2 - Q 14

A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.
The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(B) Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

OA is
SPOILER: A

Please explain. I opted for C

ans is .A...

C is out of scope and has to be slashed on first reading....rear seat passengers are not discussed in the pasage..the survey included only serverly injured drivers and front-seat passengers..

Hope this helps..

Hi Zeenie,

The conclusion states that: wearing of seat belts by drivers and front seaters would would reduce risk of accidents. However, this is based on a survey of all accident victims which showed that 80% of all severly injured drivers and front seater were not wearing seat belts.

The above includes the assumption that seat belts play an important role in accidents. This asumption gap needs to be filled.

Now we know that 20% of the severly injured drivers and front seaters wearing seat belts .and still they were severly injured.

Thus, to substantiate the claim for seat belts...a bulk of the others survyed..which may include..drivers and other passengers who escaped injury, or who had minor injuries should be wearing..seat belts..

Thus, A seems correct...

Even otherwise...in my view, B C and E are out of scope..can be elimited right away..

As regards, D ..if we go with this ..and the proportion of surveyed suffering minor injury or escaping injury increased above...exceeds substantially or even say 20% ..it will infact weaken the conclusion....

Hope the above suffice...
