Medical research findings
Medical research findings are customarily not made public prior to their publication in a medical journal that has had them reviewed by a panel of experts in a process called peer review. It is claimed that this practice delays public access to potentially beneficial information that, in extreme instances, could save lives. Yet prepublication peer review is the only way to prevent erroneous and therefore potentially harmful information from reaching a public that is ill equipped to evaluate medical claims on its own. Therefore, waiting until a medical journal has published the research findings that have passed peer review is the price that must be paid to protect the public from making decisions based on possibly substandard research.
The argument assumes that (A) unless medical research findings are brought to peer review by a medical journal, peer review will not occur (B) anyone who does not serve on medical review panel does not have the necessary knowledge and expertise to evaluate medical research finding (C) the general public does not have access to the medical journals in which research findings are published (D) all medical research findings are subjected to prepublication peer review (E) peer review panels are sometimes subject to political and professional pressures that can make their judgments less than impartial I was confused between two choices for a long time. Eventually ended up choosing the wrong one. Just want to get others to reason it out. |

I can sense why you were confused so long!
The choices are worded in such a way that no choice came to me as a distinctive winner readily: assumptions and explicitly stated information seem to shroud each other. However, I prefer A. Expecting others' opinions. |

I ll Go for D...
B says that "anyone" who is not in the medical review panel , this means that no one can evaluate the medical research findings. Neither the public nor the people who are trying to publish it.. Conclusion ----> waiting until a medical journal has published the research findings that have passed peer review is the price that must be paid to protect the public from making decisions based on possibly substandard research. If some of the research findings did not go thru the peer review process then the conclusion can be tampered.. |

IMO C .... if the general public has access to the medical journals then the argument does not hold ... it is possible that the public can make decisons based on the information published in the journals.
Seems like we have almost all the answer choices here as IMOs .... wonder what is the OA![]() |

Great guys..we hve all the answers apart from E :P
My confusion was between A and C (my reasoning for eventually choosing C is exactly the same as what 'gmatcraze' has given above)... The argument seems to fail if i negate any of A or C..so let me know why the guys who chose A eliminated C (plz dont say it jus for the sake of elimination).. As for B, I eliminated it straight off bcos negating it u get 'Some people not serving on the board still hve the knowledge & expertise'..however, I dont see the argument failing out of this. OA: A |

IMO A
(A) unless medical research findings are brought to peer review by a medical journal, peer review will not occur- correct (B) anyone who does not serve on medical review panel does not have the necessary knowledge and expertise to evaluate medical research finding-Argument doesn’t talk about this (C) the general public does not have access to the medical journals in which research findings are published-It’s definitely not an assumption (D) all medical research findings are subjected to prepublication peer review-argument says some research are not subjected to prepublication (E) peer review panels are sometimes subject to political and professional pressures that can make their judgments less than imp-not related |
