Ratios, sight-seeing tour

On a certain sight-seeing tour, the ratio of the number of women to the number of children was 5 to 2. What was the number of men on the sight-seeing tour?

(1) on the sight-seeing tour, the ratio of the number of children to the number of men was 5 to 11.

(2) the number of women on the tour was less than 30.

C. But i got the answer in a slightly different way.

Given W:C=5:2

Statement 1.

the ratio of the number of children to the number of men was 5 to 11.

So C:M=5:11

Combining both ratios W:C:M=25:10:22

So the no of men could be 22, 44 etc. No unique answer. Hence insufficient.

Statement 2.

the number of women on the tour was less than 30.

By itself the statement is insufficient.

Combining 1&2,

we get that the number of women on the tour is 25. Hence, men = 22

Hence, C is the answer.

guys..i feel the answer here should be E as it has not been specified in Statemt 2) the exact number of women, only that the number is less than 30. We have only obtained the ratio of Women: men : Children as 25: 22: 10

from Statemnt 1) , so both statements are insuff

Well, it is a ratio and it gives the relation between the no of women, children and men. The least possible ratio is W:C:M=25:10:22 which means that there should be a minimum of 25 women for the other relations to hold good.

the next possibility is 50:20:44. So even if there are 50 women the ratio still holds. you can't have ratio like 26:11:23 - just adding or subtracting no.s from the ratio wont help.

Since the question mentions no of women is less than 30, the only possibility is 25. So the answer is C.

I hope this helps... :)

I would actually go with A because :

From the stimulus, we get c=2w/5.

St 1: c/m=5/11 => 11c=5m => m=11c/5 => 11/5 (2w/5) [subs c with 2w/5]

=> m=22/25w => m/w=22/25

given that its a ratio, we can say the ratio of the number of women to the number of men is 22 to 25. So sufficient to answer the Q.

I think we can substitute c with the given info from the stimulus !!

St 2: Insufficient.

hi moma,

the ratio can be found as you said from statement 1. For the ratio W:C:M=25:10:22 you can have

25 women, 10 children and 22 men or

50 women, 20 children and 44 men or

75 women, 30 children and 66 men .....

all these fit the ratio 25:10:22. the second statement gives how many women are actually there. Since the number is below 30, the only option is 25 women and thus 22 men.

Hope this helps,

thanks
