    number line

    m & r are 2 nos. on number line. What is the value of r?
    1) the distance b/w r & 0 is 3 times the distance b/w m & 0
    2) 12 is halfway b/w m & r

    its E.

    its very obvious frm 2 statement tht they arent sufficient on their own.
    Lets combine. M&R both cant be on negative side since 12 divides them. hence either m,r > 0 or say m<0 and r>0

    m,r>0

    lets distance from 0 tom =x ; so between 0 &r = 3x; combining with statement 2 numberline will look like this

    0--------m--------12--------r--
    <----x---><---x----><---x--->

    solving we get 2x=12, x = 6 m=6 & r =18 satisfies both statement.

    but lets m<0 and r>0
    m------0-------12------|------r---
    <--x---><--x--><---x--><--x-->
    so x = 12

    thn values of m = -12 and r = 36 also

    so we have 2 values of m & R .

    C: Insuff

    it sud b E

    wrong!!!

    answer should be C

    the values are m=6, r=18

    12 is half way between then and distance between 0 and r is 3 times distance between 0 and m

    y not -12, 36 too?

    st1: distance from -12 to 0 = 12 units = 3 times distance between 0 & 36.
    st 2: 12 is midway between -12 & 36 . at a distance of 24 units from either.

    I opt for E.

    1) Insufficient.
    2) Insufficient.

    1) + 2)

    If M is +ve........then M = 6, thus R = 18 to satisfy both pieces of info.
    If M is -ve.........then M = -12, and R = 36 in this case and still satisfies both pieces of info.

    Thus both together are insuffucient too......and the best answer is E. What is the Official Answer? Does this make sense?
