co-ordinate geometry..looks simlple..but there is a catch
In the rectangular coordinate system, if line a is parallel to one of the axes, does line a contain the point (4, 5) ?
(1) Line a contains the point (4, -5). (2) Line a crosses the x-axis. answer: SPOILER: c I thought it would be an 'a' ... but the answer is different..can anyone tell me the role of stmt 2

If a line contains the point (a,b) and is parallel to the y-axis, then the line's equation is x=a; where the line will contain only points (a,y) for all values of y. If a line contains the point (a,b) and is parallel to the x-axis, then the line's equation is y=b; where the line will contain only points (x,b) for all values of x. Either line's equetion x=4 or y=5 will satisfy the conditions of the question stem. First statement: The line's equetion is either x=4 or y=-5 Not sufficient. Second statement: The line is parallel to the y-axis. Not sufficient. Both statements: The line's equation is x=4. Sufficient. Answer is C. |
