    fractional part

What fractional part of the total surface area of cube C is red?
    (1) Each of 3 faces of C is exactly 1/2 red.
    (2) Each of 3 faces of C is entirely white.

--> B is out because we don't know the colours of the other 3 faces. But why is A not the answer? (Because we do not know wether the other 3 faces are entirely red???)

    IMO (C).
    Cube has 6 equal surfaces.

Statement 1: This only says that 3 out of six surfaces are half red. We do not know if the remaining 3 surfaces are 1/4 red, say. - INSUFFICIENT
Statement 2: This only says that 3 out of six surfaces are white. We do not know the info on the remaining 3 surfaces. - INSUFFICIENT

Combining both statements together we can say that only three surfaces out of six are half red. We also know that the remaining surfaces aren't red. - SUFFICIENT.
    Hence, C.

    IMO its A..stmt 1 says 3 faces are half-painted with red..we know that a cube has 6 faces..the required fraction : 3*0.5/6=1.5/6=1/4

a little confused here...is the above approach correct? or should we go about thinking that, parts or whole of the remaining faces also could be painted red?

Yes, you got it. The confusion is that we do not know wether the other 3 faces are 1/4 red, or completely red, or ...
