Which of the following inequalities is an algebraic expression for the shaded part of the number line above? (A) |x| ≤ 3 (B) |x| ≤ 5 (C) |x − 2| ≤ 3 (D) |x − 1| ≤ 4 (E) |x + 1| ≤ 4 this is OG 12, Q130 i don't understand why we don't chose B. plug in any number, and |x| will give ≤ 5. why is the answer E and not B? (even though i do understand that E is correct as well, but so is B) |

I would suggest you to always open a new thread for new questions to get better response. to answer your question, in B even +4 and +5 is included and we need only the range -5 to 3 in E, x + 1 <= 4 x <= 3 x = 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3 x + 1 is negative then -(x + 1) <=4 - x - 1 <= 4 -x <= 5 x = -5, -4, -3, -2 , -1 , 0 , 1 ,2 .... 5 Intersection of the above two sets gives the answer |
