Absolute Value Question - OG messed up?
Every once in while the OG will have a question with a mistake. However, the following question has a detailed explanation for the answer choice, and I would hope that the author of the question would have realized a mistake if there was one.
A = -2 B = -1 C = 0 D = 1 E = 2 Q: Of the five coordinates associated with the points A, B, C, D, and E on the number line above, which has the greatest absolute value? (A) A (B) B (C) C (D) D (E) E A: Since both |-2| and |2| = 2, both (A) and (E) should be correct. The book however states that -2 has the greatest absolute value of the choices, and (A) is the correct answer. Is this question mistyped in the book? Thank you, Daniel |

Unfortunately, you have one of the recently printed OG's that have quite a few errors. Check out earlier printings and you will find E is actually supposed to be a little to the left of 2.
Here are some of the other errors I have found in the lastest printing: All of the diagrams and many of the equations in pp.108-146 and pp.278-339 are of poor quality. Many of them are difficult or impossible to read. p.287, q.107: Statement (2) says: "s = 4B". It should say: "s = 4". p.288, q.128: The question says: "...is x|x| < 2x ?" It should say: "...is x|x| < 2^x ?" p.290, q.142: Statement (2) says: "x > 0 = b". It should say "x > 0". Table 3 on p.801 is the same as Table 2 on p.800. There is no table for Total Scores. |

I've been using the OG for GRE practice. Thanks for the heads up. Do you think it is possible the there could be errors in the official pool of questions that are used during the actual GMAT/GRE? I've heard stories that they have had to send out re-vised scored to people due to errors. I hope they are more full-proof on the real test questions.

I would think that the list of questions that they use for the official exam are pretty well screened, but that doesn't mean that some ambiguous or mistyped questions don't slip through the cracks.
The OG does have a bit of typo's though. I'm about 80% done with the book and I'd say that you'll find a goof once every 5-10 pages. Out of 800+ pages, thats a lot. Granted, the majority are typo's like: Answer choices A A C D E. Or small grammatical mistakes. But every once in a while, they will goof on the Most of them are obviously mistakes from someone transposing the question. Since the questions in the OG come from previous GMAT exams, I'm hoping that the reason for the typo's is that they don't have a copy/paste function to get the questions into the OG. I'm sure that if they find a question that is blatantly misprinted, they'll devise some way to discount that question or to simply give you credit. |

U have to note the image printed along with the question and you have to take reference of the arrow marks above it to actually decide on the answer. This is no typo but it is actually a trap !! I fell to it, before actually realizing this .. |
