problem on fractions

148. Which of the following is closest to 1/2?
(A) 4/7
(B) 5/9
(C) 5/11
(D) 50/99
(E) 50/101

In the heat of the moment what is the best way to get the answer... we can make out that its not a,b,c for sure.... but how to decide between d and e.

12rk34 is on the way!
Heart

Now the one with smallest denominator will be closest to 1/2.
1/2 = 50.5/101
50.5/101 - 50/101 = 1/202
Similarly,
50/99 - 49.5/99 = 1/198
Since 1/202 < 1/198, E is the answer. ( A, B and C are closer to 1/2 to a lesser extent. )
