refreshment
In the village of 100 households 75 have at least 1 DVD player, 80 have at least 1 cell phone, 55 have at least 1 mp3 player. If X and Y are respectively the greatest and smallest possible number of households that have all 3 of the devices, X-Y=
rajatmeh
Is the answer 55?

pj_gmat
IMO it should be 45 Max = 55 ( we all agree) Min: People without DVD = 25 without Cell phone = 20 Min people have all 3 = 55-25-20 = 10 total people |----------------------------------------------|100 cell phone |----------------------------------| 80 dvd(75) 25|--------------------------------|100 mp3(25) 25 80 mp3(20) |----------------| |-------------| so minimum people have all three =
pj_gmat
another way to look at it to get the minimum value we have to consider the worst case People have only cell and dvd = people with no mp3 = 45 total people = people with DVD + mp3 + cell - ( all 3 + only dvd and cell + only dvd and mp3 + only cell and mp3) 100 = 80+75+55 - ( all 3 + ...) all 3 ( let say MIN) = 110 - ( having only 2) MIN can have minimum value when ( having only 2 ) has max people with only dvd + cell = people with no mp3 = 100-55 = 45 similarly for other 2 its 25 and 20 MIN = 100 - (45 +20 + 25) =
