Percent & Fraction conversions

Can someone please show me step by step how to solve this problem.(I am horrible at math, so please make it as easy as possible) I cannot figure out how I am messing up my conversions. :mad:

When 1/10 percent of 5000 is subtracted from 1/10 of 5000, the difference is:

A) 0

B) 50

C) 450

D) 495

E) 500

1/10 of 5000 means you need to multiply ;

ie; 1/10 *5000= 500

any number that follows the word from comes first

(for e.g; when 5 is subracted from 10 means

10-5)

the q states that;

(1/10 *5000) -(1/10% *5000)

(sorry I missed out the %.....)

:(

so ans is D

(D) it is

1/10 (5000) - (1/10)% (5000) = 500 - 1/1000 (5000) = 495

I understand the directions the words in the problem are telling me what to do. It was figuring out 1/10% that was throwing me.

I found a simple explanation in the Princeton Review.

I don't care what the HATERS say about PR, I found it to be a wonderful resource.

Thanx anyway

The trick to this problem is understanding the difference between 1/10 percent (or point ten percent) and 1/10 (or ten percent). When you convert the percentages into decimal form you get 1/10 percent = .10% = .001 and 1/10 = 10% = .1. After this step the rest is pretty simple. 5,000(.10) - 5,000(.001) = 495
