    rate - bus driver

    on each shift, a bus driver earns x dollars per hour for the first 8 hours worked and 1.5x dollars per hour for each hour over 8 hours. If the driver earns $475 for a week in which he worked 5 shifts, what is the value of x?

    How many hours bus driver worked in each shift ? If I assume different hours ( sometimes >8 , sometimes <8 ) my answer will be different, even though the total income is $475.

    If I assume, bus driver has to work minm 8 hours ( though not written anywhere ) , then x could be 10

    40x + 1.5x * n ( extra times ) = 475

    x = 10 , n = 5 hrs extra ( spread accross 5 shifts )

    So, I am in dilemma, which one is the answer .. 10 or cannot be determined

    IMO cannot be determined unless total hours worked is mentioned

    The driver worked 5 shifts OK, Suppose he worked overtime daily ( May be) say for Y hrs then total hrs he worked in a week is 5x8 + 5Y = 40 + 5Y. Now He gets x dollars for first 8 hrs and 1.5x dollars for Overtime Hrs. So we can put up equation
    40x + 5Y*1.5X = 475. Now Until we know Y We can't find out X.

    Ans E Can't be determined.

    Th answer cannot be found until the number of hours for overtime is mentioned.
    Therefore x = 95/(8+1.5*n)
    where n = overtime hours
