I reckon the question should be read as ...
If xy=1 then what is 2^[(x+y)^2]/2^[(x-y)^2]?
i.e., 2^{[(x+y)^2] - [(x-y)^2]}
i.e., 2^{(x^2 + y^2 + 2xy) - (x^2 + y^2 - 2xy)}
i.e., 2^(4xy)
i.e., 2^4
= 16
wait, it's 2^(x+y)^2?
The document looks like 2*(x+2)^2, since when did ( become ^?

Unfortunately that's how it looked in GMATPrep ... but if you try to solve it you'd kind of know ...
Moreover, why would the question divide 2 by 2 !

How can GMATPrep display incorrectly???
I too was confused by 2 in both numerator and denominator.
Is there an issue with this question? How can gmatprep have an issue?
People who have already taken the test, can we see such display problem on the real test ??
