Don't really understand this question

If the units digit of the three-digit positive integer k is nonzero, what is the tens digit of k?
(1) The tens digit of k + 9 is 3.
(2) The tens digit of k + 4 is 2.

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Let us say k = A B C. Where B is the digit in the tens place and C > 0.

If I am understanding the question correctly;

from 1) B + 9 = 3
from 2) B + 4 = 2

Which implies that it is only displaying the unit's digit of these additions. Wouldn't the answer be straightforward that is from 1) B = 4 or from 2) B = 8.

I am missing something here I guess.

you got confused between K and tenth digit of K.

The statements are K + 9 and K+ 4 not B+9 and B+4.

1. The tenth digit of K+9 is 3.
The unit digit of K can be from 1 to 9, so when the unit digit of K added to 9 the values will be 10 to 18. Therefore 1 will be carried over to the tenth digit of K.
B+1 = 3 => B=2.
Therefore statement 1 will be sufficient to answer.
2. The tenth digit of K+4 is 2.
The unit digit of K can be from 1 to 9, so when the unit digit of K added to 4 the values will be 5 to 13.
Therefore if the unit digit of K is from 1 to 5, the value of B will be 2.
If the unit digit of K is from 6 to 9, the value of B will be 1.

Therefore statement 2 will not be sufficient to answer.
