How to understand very complex sentences in RC and CR?
Hi guys,
I have some problems about RC and CR, not only run out of time but also can't understand complex sentences. Sometimes I put much time, read slowly and try to understand it (about 20-30 minutes per passage), but I still don't understand the global meaning of each paragraph. Although I read the explanation in OG, I also don't understand. Consequently, I usually made wrong answers more than 50% in each passage. Please suggest how can I improve the reading skill. Many thanks |

Re: How to understand very complex sentences in RC and CR?
Hi CBS I would suggest just relax. May be you dont like reading or u just read topics of ur interest. So just hook on to net and read articles on Ny times Cnn or some wb site which talks about science- including Physical and Soical (as both the topics are covered). WHen u read try visualisig the essence of the statement. Read till u understand. For that purpose u can translate it into ur mother tongue or any comi lingo. Once you get idea of assimilation next u have to move on to understanding the flow. N believe me it is possible but what u need to do is read n read. Unlike Rc in Gmat Cr is short where in every piece of data is important. Try getting hold of Kaplan's 3 modal appaoch for Cr.
Hope this Helps Alien |

Re: How to understand very complex sentences in RC and CR?
CBS,
I would strongly advise you to develop the habit of reading all types of articles - make reading your pastime. That is the only sure-shot way to ace the RC section; more importantly this skill will stand you in good stead throughout your life and work. Alien, I think using the language translation approach is a very bad approach. Many people are weak in English solely on account of this habit. To become fluent in English - or any language for that matter - you need to be able to THINK IN that language. After all, all people learn their mother tongue that way. The GMAT requires you to have a real good feel for the English language and unless you have at least a Level 4 mastery - which is enough for conducting business in the language - you cannot hope to do your personal best. In my test I had to complete the last 12 questions in verbal in 8 minutes or so - I strongly feel that's where I lost 10 points - and the first 3 or 4 of those 12 were RC. When you face that kind of time-pressure, you really need to know how to sprint through an RC. |
