IMO C, B, D
My reason of choosing C is because the main purpose of the passage is to say that the organizational theory can't fully explain why business downsize b/c it does not take into consideration non-economic impacts of downsizing. Thus the discussion regarding the mythical aspects of downsizing. Thus it's to "offer an alternative to a traditional explanation for the occurrence of downsizing" and not to chronicle "chronicle how perceptions of downsizing have changed over time". If the author's main point is to chronicle how perception have changed then we can expect the passage to contain more discussion on the previous perception of downsizing as act of desperation and what caused the analysts change their perception to view downsizing in a more positive light. |

34) I would go with C. The first part of the passage talks about "economic rationality" being the traditional reason why firms downsize. The rest of the passage offers an alternative reason for managers to downsize, namely: looks good in the press, it's received positively by key actors, it gives the firm added prestige, etc.
