Author's Main Point and Inference Questions

I need some help with my reading comprehension and these forums have been very helpful. I am planning to take the GMAT in a couple of weeks and i have worked long and hard on the RC. I have issues with figuring out the Author's Main Point or primary goal in the passage and also with questions that ask what is inferred by the passage.
Any suggestions?
