The subject of this sentence should be "Neanderthals" not "the vocal tracts" because of the word "they" in "why they were supplanted by our own species." "they" can not be "the vocal tracts"

Will go with B. I believe Neanderthals is the subject. With the choice between A and B will choose B because A wrongly compares - vocal tract (singular) with those (plural)...
