24. For members of the seventeenth-century Ashanti nation in Africa, animal-hide
shields with wooden frames were essential items of military equipment, a
method to protect
warriors against enemy arrows and spears.
(A) a method to protect
(B) as a method protecting
(C) protecting
(D) as a protection of
(E) to protect

OA
SPOILER: C

The OA seems to be correct, but there is one more option which look pretty correct.

jeril842002,

I don't see why "to infinitive" is needed for this sentence.

In this example, protecting~~ modifies and explain what military equipment is for( in nature).

In general, to infinitive is used to express the purpose. I do know it has a subtle difference, it will come to you soon.

Thanks.
