A. that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed.
C. it was closing up to one fourth of its stores because of poor sales. When I first read this, I wanted to choose A, because of the idiom "announce that." It was down to between A and C. But if you read A over 23 times, as I did, the "they" will begin to sound as if it is being referred back to sales. "Since sales of up to 1/4th of its stores are poor, they [sales] will be closed." Which does not make much logical sense... I pick C for this reason, even though it lacks the idiomatic expression of "announce that." Last edited by linfongyu : 2009 August 29th at 05:47 AM. |

Please refer to the original article here...
The question has been lifted from NewYork Times it uses the correct idiom "announced that" As 800bob says pronouns reference such as "they" is a clarity problem not grammatical problem Can someone pls help me find out errors in A ansd why C is betterh without that |

SNV, linfongyu is correct... Taken that they is clarity problem and not grammatical problem..but a few rules to resolve the pronoun reference issues will help us to kick A out..Here are they: 1) If a pronoun has two antecedents, match the case..The antecedent with the same case as that of the pronoun will be the one to which the pronoun refer.. 2) If a pronoun has two antecedents, match the case..If the case of both the antecedents are same as that of the pronoun, then match the structure of the sentence..A sub pronoun will refer to sub antecedent and an obj. pronoun will refer to the obj antecedent.. in A: that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed. Sales is the sub of the clause: sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor They is the sub of the clause: they will be closed... Hence in A THEY refers to the sales..and creates an absurd meaning and so OUT..
