    idiom associated with "prohibit"

    Here is the question:

Concerned by the increasing trade deficit, the government passed legislation which prohibits the consumer to purchase computers that contain microchips manufactured overseas.

    • which prohibits the consumer to purchase computers that contain
    • prohibiting the consumer from computer purchases which contain
    • that prohibit the consumer to purchase computers containing
    • that prohibits the consumer from purchasing computers that contain
    • prohibiting the consumer to purchasing computers which are containing

C is out - subject verb agreement
E is out - "computers which are containing" - wrong tense form; also consumer to purchasing is wrong idiom.

    what about others?

    The correct idioms are:

    prohibit someone from verbing
    prohibit noun

You can write "prohibit the consumer from purchasing" or "prohibit purchases," but you cannot write "prohibit the consumer to purchase" (as in A and C), or "prohibit the consumer to purchasing" (as in E), or "prohibit from purchases" (as in B).

    The correct response is D.

Note that A, B, and E are wrong also because they use which to introduce a restrictive clause.
