Napoleon's army entered Russia....
Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns (B) their previous campaigns had had (C) they had for any previous campaign (D) in their previous campaigns (E) for any previous campaign

IMO
..than their previous campaigns had had had had is a past perfect of the verb "to have", it is used in scenarios to express an activity that happened before another activity , in the past. Last edited by atishree : 2009 November 5th at 03:35 PM. Reason: added explanation |

It's E..
The subject of the sentence is Napolean's army which is singular (can be easily figured out by seeing IT in the non-underlined portion: it had provisions for only twenty-four days )...all the choices from A to D uses plural THEY or THEIR to refer back to the army..hence only E remains and the OA...

ENTERED : Is in past tense. So the verb of the clause it had in its previous campaigns should be in past perfect tense because it happened before the ENTERED happened...Pls. note that HAD in the clause doesn't represent the past perfect, it represents the possession of the supplies..so we need one more HAD to denote make it past perfect..hence the correct sentence(rather clause) will be: it had had in its previous campaigns . HTH..
