Singular and Plural

The Police are investigating the murder, but haven't arrested anyone.

Please let me know what's wrong with the above sentence or is it correct?

We dont need "but" in this sentence. "but" usually shows contrast. Here you need a conjunction to join both the sentence.

using "and" will be appropriate.

The police are investigating the murder and they haven't arrested anyone.

Police is plural

This sentence can be rewritten in different ways depending upon what is intended from it.

In the american versionpolice is a collective noun hence requires a singular verb.

sentence should be The Police is investigating the murder, but hasn't arrested anyone.

In the British versionpolice is a collective noun and requires a plural verb.
sentence should be The Police are investigating the murder, but haven't arrested anyone.

Over the years, The plural form has replaced the singular form particularly for the noun "the police", so the original sentence is correct.

Agree with achar_varun...Police is singular in GMAT...so the correct verb is IS and not ARE..
_ _ _ _ SIG _ _ _ _

Adi..I get page could not be found error...can you pls. try opening the page and let us know if POLICE is really a plural ..as per manhattan SC guide, all the collective nouns are singular (considering the context in which it is used is neglected..)
