ramyagupta
1. In a leveraged buyout, investors borrow huge sums of money to buy companies, hoping to pay off the debt by using the company’s earnings and to profit richly by the later resale of the companies or their divisions. (A) by using the company’s earnings and to profit (B) by using the companies’ earnings and by profiting © using the companies’ earnings and profiting (D) with the company’s earnings, profiting (E) with the companies’ earnings and to profit
shud
Its between A and E as both maintains the llelism '..to pay off... and to profit..' I don't have any good reasons to distinguish between the two usage with/by 1) in E, companies's plural is aligned with earlier reference of companies. Also, I am not very sure whether 'with' is correct, but seems better than 'by using' 2) in D, 'debt by ...' is parallel with 'profit by..' , better than E. tough call. I'll go for E. sickvick
E is better as in A "by using" is not needed.
bungholio
good question. I prefer E. The debt is paid off with the earnings, so I choose "with" whats the OA?
pharmindo
Would go with E. The answer should have "companies' earnings", so A and D are out.
gmatin2006
Between A and E, I have picked E too. A uses the singular "the company’s earnings" whereas the rest of the sentence uses "companies"
yoda_ngen
Yup!! E is the best choice here.
ramyagupta
thats really cool.. difference btw A and B is really subtle .now cud get that ..this is the lesson i learnt ..keep ur eyes wide ..go to and fro all the parts of the sentence..!! OA E
jjaacc
My answer: C A: parallelism problem B: too many ‘by’s C: not sure about the word ‘using’, since its pay off debt…with…but ‘profiting’ sounds good. D: company’s is wrong as we are buying many companies E: to buy….to profit.. or should it be profiting? With is good. Close call between C and E for me. Can someone explain why it is “to profit” and not “profiting” to match the “hoping”

akhilesh_76
Same confusion why not C?
iknownoone
I'd go with E akhilesh_76, C does not have parallelism - "to pay off .....profiting" is incorrect. "profit" needs to be in parallel with "to pay".
