I think I see why you are confused, you think that sentence is like that
"According to..... a majority of young adults, like that(majority) of earlier generations" Hpwever, in here not nouns, clauses with the verb to be are being compared. whenever you see to be, you should decide what are things compared....
look at the following example, and similarities in construction.
Just as swimming is good example (owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults), skiing is a great way to burn calories (we need as here)
