avikar
Once they had seen the report from the medical examiner, the investigators did not doubt whether the body recovered from the river was the man who had attempted to escape from the state prison. (A) did not doubt whether the body recovered from the river was (B) have no doubt whether the body recovered from the river was © had not doubted that the body recovered from the river was (D) have no doubt whether the body recoveredfrom the river was that of (E) had no doubt that the body recovered from the river was that of Can some please explain the difference between D and E and which one is better in this sentence? ToptobOttomsuP
IMO E. Had is used for an action that is completed in past. Have is used for current or the latest action. Ex. I have a dog ---> I have a dog now. I had a dog --> I had a dog until now/recetnly. I have had a Dog --> I have had a dog from a point in past to a later point in past. Not recently. I hope this helps.
nagar
E as already well explained by topbobo....
chatru
I will go with "E" (A) did not doubt whether the body recovered from the river was (B) have no doubt whether the body recovered from the river was © had not doubted that the body recovered from the river was (D) have no doubt whether the body recovered from the river was that of ( two actions are happening in the past : one after another but both in the past. so use "perfect past / simple past " is correct (E) had no doubt that the body recovered from the river was that of
malla_g
E is right choice on this one. Key is "that of " and "had" as explained by topto..
dshweta
IMO E. Had seen...had no doubt...had attempted
rays28
I would opt for E because - after the past perfect ('had seen ' happened earlier than the second 'had'), it should be past indefinite (that happened later than the previous) and the second 'had no doubt' is past indefinite of 'have' as the principal verb and not the usage of 'had' as auxilliary verb as used in past perfect. avikar
OA is E. I thought, even now investigators still do not have any doubt.. "Having no doubt" is true not only in the past but also in present right? r4rohini
clear case of E. "Had" is used for an action that is completed in past
maverick_andy
I will go with "E" (D) have no doubt whether the body recovered from the river was that of ( two actions are happening in the past : one after another but both in the past. so use "perfect past / simple past " is correct:tup: (E) had no doubt that the body recovered from the river was that of E is rite one
beatit
I chose "e" because "that of" is essential. body cannot be man. On re-thinking, why can't the answer be D?
sjpre10
In this "that" represents "the body" or "the river"? Since nearest noun is "the river" so E can't be the choice.
nshabde
As the sentence has "had seen" ....so "had no doubt" is correct. So IMO E
