(A) makes it possible to study the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever before (Plural subject-singular verb)

(B) make it possible to study, in greater detail, the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river than ever before CORRECT

© have made it possible to study in greater detail than ever before the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river (two problems, 1st: we do not need have 2nd: now before distorts the meaning of the original sentence)

(D) make possible the study of the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than it ever was before (usage of was is just wrong)

(E) has made it more possible than ever before to study in greater detail the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river (plural subject- singular verb)

C for me is the correct answer.

New techniques in thermal-scanning photography, a process that records radiation from surface areas, makes it possible to study the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever before.

(A) makes it possible to study the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever before Should be make

(B) make it possible to study, in greater detail, the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river than ever before.

What is 'than ever before' modifying here? Make it possible more than ever before or in greater detail than ever before???? The sentence has a very awkward construction.

© have made it possible to study in greater detail than ever before the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river. Correct answer. Correct subject verb agreement and than ever before is adding a qualitative sensibility to study.

(D) make possible the study of the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than it ever was before.

(E) has made it more possible than ever before to study in greater detail the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river( have should have been here)

  • 2 years later...

I found how 'it' fit into the sentence.

There is so called 'formal object' in English. The following example make it clear.

ex) I make it a rule to get up early.

it = formal object

a rule = objective compliment

to get up early = real object

another example is

ex) You will find it pleasant talking with her.

it = formal object

pleasant = object compliment

talking with her = real object

therefore

C) have made it possible to study in greater detail than ever before the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river - correct

it = formal object

possible = object compliement

to study in greather than... = real object.

Feel so good to learn something today.

it seems that

c) suggests that the technique makes (us) to know more details of the study.

whereas d) compares before and now.

We couldn't know details of the study in the past, but now we can get to know more details because of this technique.

I need some verification, Buddies please help me out here!

I think "than it ever was before"is wrong because it should come after an element of comparison like "make more possible the study...".

I first choosed B but I now agree that it sounds too heavy. C should be the best answer.
