I thought "numbers of" is always incorrect. Is there a typo ?
that might escape.... and kill ..... this is parallel. So, A and B are out
D - uses incorrect pronoun "them"
E - same as D
C is correct
When the technique known as gene-splicing was invented in the early 1970's, it was feared that scientists
might inadvertently create an "Andromeda strain," a microbe never before seen on Earth that might escape
from the laboratory and it would kill vast numbers of humans who would have no natural defenses against it.
(A) it would kill vast numbers of humans who would have no natural defenses against it
(B) it might kill vast numbers of humans with no natural defenses against it
(C) kill vast numbers of humans who would have no natural defenses against it
(D) kill vast numbers of humans who have no natural defenses against them
(E) kill vast numbers of humans with no natural defenses against them
My choice :SPOILER: BCorrect choice:SPOILER: C

I too think so. I eliminated all answers due to "numbers of".
jokes apart, "with no natural defences" is not properly referring to humans. Thats why I eliminated it. I think basic rule for SC is to "never asume anything". Here people will think it is referring back to humans.
I may be wrong. Please correct me.

I think would in C makes it a better choice.
D suggests that there are some peopl who were having natural defenses
E I felt that virus is killing human with something.
Only C gave the meaning that it might kill humans who might not have defenses against.
D and E are wrong because of "them". defenses against virus.
