LegoLife
My answer is D. In 1981 and in 1997 - parallel. chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1997
CrackXam
B and D are close. I go with B for greater llism.

saira
can someone explain this - i think "D" should be the answer.
celesking
In D, I am not sure what is being compared: hours to hours or chores to hours? I also think that the correct structure is 'compared to'. However, I am not sure how 'compare with' is used diffirently than 'compare to'
aru4912
clearly B;usage of 'had grown' is correct. In the question, if the years were swapped, my answer would have been 'D'. Am I right here ? i.e., if the question were: In 1997 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing household chores; by 1981 they had spent nearly six hours a week. and option D were: chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1981
aru4912
what I am trying to say here is the chronological order is important while using 'compared with'. I am not sure of this is correct but Saira /Lego/Surya please let me know your views on this.(I am just trying to learn the rules here..) LegoLife
I agree with aru4912, Chronological order makes a difference in the usage of "compare with", when the comparing objects are Dated events. In such comparisons, the latter part serves as a reference. When we compare X with Y, it is logically correct to place the latest event as X and the past event as Y. Good observation, aru4912.
