Greatly influenced by the protestant Missionary Samuel Kirkland, the Onieda was the only one of the five-nation Iroquois League who sided with the colonists during the American Revolution.

A. was the only one of the five-nation Iroquois League who sided

B. was alone of the five-nation Iroquois League when they sided

C. alone among the five nations of the Iroquois League sided

D. were the only ones out of the five nations of Iroquois League in siding

E. only of the five-nations Iroquois League had sided

My answer is C.

("one of the five nations" is the correct construct)

A. was the only one of the five-nation Iroquois League who sided

B. was alone of the five-nation Iroquois League when they sided

C. alone among the five nations of the Iroquois League sided

D. were the only ones out of the five nations of Iroquois League in siding

E. only of the five-nations Iroquois League had sided

However, I would have preferred a "," in choice C:

Greatly influenced by the protestant Missionary Samuel Kirkland, the Onieda, alone among the five nations of the Iroquois League, sided with the colonists during the American Revolution.

DJValentino,

I get your point. But the stem talks about "five-nation Iroquois League" similar to eight-nation summit or triparty or three-party meet. In that sense, I believe five-nation rather than nations is correct. Is there any other reason why you would prefer C?

A. was the only one of the five-nation Iroquois League who sided - only seems to be redundant

B. was alone of the five-nation Iroquois League when they sided - the pronoun or verb should be singular to corrospond to "The Onieda" since it seems the sentence refers to it collectively

C. alone among the five nations of the Iroquois League sided

D. were the only ones out of the five nations of Iroquois League in siding- same as B above

E. only of the five-nations Iroquois League had sided - seems odd

Thought A first, but I think this choice doesn't make sense:

A. was the only one of the five-nation Iroquois League who sided

does this mean it was only one of five-nation league (meaning there were other five-nation leagues)

---C, although a bit awkward makes it clear that it was one of the five-nations in the league

What's the OA?
