    D. bones known at present as of large prehistoric animals, were usually assumed as those of

    E. currently known as those of large prehistoric animal, were usually assumed to be those of

Issue: Incorrect modifier "now known to ....animals"

    A. (the same)

---- Incorrect modifier "now known to ....animals"

    B. presently known as from large prehistoric animals, were usually assumed as

--- Incorrect modifier "presently known as from large prehistoric animals"...Also, "known to be" is better than "known as"

    C. bones now known to be those of large prehistoric animals, were usually assumed to be

--- CORRECT.."bones now known.....animals". and also usage of "known to be"

    D. bones known at present as of large prehistoric animals, were usually assumed as those of

---- Though this sentence intorduces "bones known at.......animals" modifier , but "known at" is an unidomatic usage. Again, "assumed as those" is incorrect constuction.

    E. currently known as those of large prehistoric animal, were usually assumed to be those of

--- Incorrect Modifiers.. "currently known as ...... animal"

The problems to be cleared in this question are of Modifier, Verb agreement & Pronoun reference

The modifier just after Europe seems to modify Europe instead of bones. so starting the modifier with bones will clear that problem -- Choice C&D

Propnoun reference: In case of D 'those of" refers to remains, hence makes the sentence with a illogical meaning that bones are of the remains. C gives a better picture.

C is better with "known to be those of large" as compared to "known at present as of large"

    c
assumed to be is the right idiom, and bones has to be mentioned , thats coz u r modifying bones .. others modify europe and we certainly dont want to do so...

so start with bones and use proper idiom assume to be .

    C. "Known to" is the correct idiom. So we can eliminate d, e, b

A can be eliminated because " now known" clearly has no referent
