D is the right option for 2 reasons:
1. The statement is in present perfect. So options B and D are correct
2. in option B, to do that is wrong... it should be 'to do so'
Hence D is the right choice

I think answer should be between C and E.

Schlieman determined at the age X to find Y devoted his subsequent career...

Not very confident b/w C & E....."to that end" looks better than "to such an end".............I will go for E.

exactly what is bad with B and D?...i know A is a hopeless choice.

B-has devoted his susequent career to do that. "present perfect" is not required here. "devoted" is just fine....it states what is required. Also, as per sentence we do not know "Schlieman" is today alive or not. We must not assume the tense here....and see if we have safe option available.
C-devoted his subsequent career to such an end.
D-has devoted his subsequent career for that. "present perfect" is not required here. "devoted" is just fine
E-devoted his subsequent career to that end. Correct.
