defylogic
IMO C. A. In the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the United States acquired 828,000 square miles for about four cents an acre, which more than doubled the country’s size and that brought - which more than doubled..which refers to four cents an acre, does not make sense here B. For about four cents an acre the United States acquired, in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, 828,000 square miles, more than doubling the country’s size and it brought - too confusing, the sentence breaks the normal flow while it can simply worded. C. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the United States acquired 828,000 square miles for about four cents an acre, more than doubling its size and bringing -Correct, more than doubling... correctly modifies the previous clause D. The United States, in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, for about four cents an acre, acquired 828,000 square miles, more than doubling the country’s size, bringing - too much use of commas and C is definitely better. E. Acquiring 828,000 square miles in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the United States bought it for about four cents an acre, more than doubling the country’s size and bringing - use of "it" is ambiguous. How can the US buy "The lousianna purchase of 1803".

vs8980
no doubt about C in E bought it sounds awkward. one more problem, I feel, with E is that the participle 'bringing and doubling' is qualifying 'bought it' - however 'acquiring', not present in the main clause, is the one they should qualify
Test Taker
Yeah C. Not sure why I went for D during the rest.It looks awkward in hindsight.
