Imo A

B, C - eliminated such non salary compensation as dont think we can insert words btwn such as
D- use of like-
E - doesnt link well-there were cuts made in nonsalary compensation, in areas allowances for..
so ans is A

D and E are out here..
allowances are an example of nonsalary compensation, so the usage of 'such as' seems relevant..+ the use of 'as in' in A is awkward..

(C) - incorrect usage of such as..such as shd be giving examples for non salary compensation..however the sentence says-
"such nonsalary compensation as cuts in allowances..."

IMO (B)..such nonsalary compensation as allowances for ....(allowances are examples of the compensation)

B is perfect..
(A) cuts were made in nonsalary compensation, as in ----> "allowances for overseas assignments and club memberships" are examples ,using as in shows yjey are not examples but a different set in which cuts are made..
(B) cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as ---> fine
(C) cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as those in ---> double referrence to "cuts were made in"
(D) cuts in nonsaIary compensation were made in areas like ---> like is used to show similarity not examples
(E) there were cuts made in nonsalary compensation, in areas -->awkward

A. as in - Incorrect logically as it shows something unmentioned
B - correct as listing is done by "as ...)
c. Those in - same as A
D - like - used to compare nouns and list only one noun
E - runn off sentence

Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 244	D and E are out here.. allowances are an example of nonsalary compensation, so the usage of 'such as' seems relevant..+ the use of 'as in' in A is awkward.. (C) - incorrect usage of such as..such as shd be giving examples for non salary compensation..however the sentence says- "such nonsalary compensation as cuts in allowances..." IMO (B)..such nonsalary compensation as allowances for ....(allowances are examples of the compensation)
