trying_to_study
Geologists believe that the warning signs for a major earthquake may include sudden fluctuations in local seismic activity, tilting and other deformations of the Earth's crust, changing the measured strain across a fault zone, and varying the electrical properties of underground rocks. A.... B. changing measurements of the strainacross a fault zone, and varying C. changing the strain as measured across a fault zone, and variations of D. changes in the measured strain across a fault zone, and variations in E. changes in measurements of teh strain across a fault zone, and variations among Can someone please explain this...:mad:

Itsmyturn
IMO D Parallelism is tested here. fluctuations in local seismic activity tilting and other deformations of the Earth's crust is parallel with changes in the measured strain across a fault zone and variations in the electrical properties of underground rocks
Test Taker
D it is. You can eliminate A,B and C to maintain parallelism. Then comes the tricky part where u need to choose between D and E.So look at the last few words in each choice.'Variations in' coveys that there are changes in the values of electrical properties. But 'changes among' conveys the meaning that variations are being compared. trying_to_study
thanks.... but can someone plz explain how is "tilting and..." parallel with "changes..." and not with "changing..."??
Makumajon
The SC talks about tilting [of] and other deformations of the Earth's crust. So, you are using tilting as a gerund (noun equivalent), not a participle (verb equivalent).
