Star

A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

(A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.
(B) After passing through a red giant stage, de- pending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a star’s mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
(D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

Don't u think 'its' in B is amgibuous? Also the modifer should be close to the phrase being modified.

I was swinging in between B and D.

I though in D - Mass refers to whose mass?
May be I am critically reasoning the SC.

Id not mark B because compress itself illogically indicates that the star somehow has some way of performing the action itself. In reality, however, other physical factors force it to compress into some thing.

Also, ' de- pending on its mass, a star'- I think a star, depending should be the correct order. this illogically suggests that compression depends on the mass of the red giant phase.

Wonder if you guys agree with this.

I think it is B. Please post the OA?

(A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

wrong: because last phrase "depending on mass" shouldn't be associated with stage rather it should be associated with "start"

(B) After passing through a red giant stage, de- pending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

correct, I think "de- pending" is a typo in the sentence.
And it is correct in my opinion because first if you remove the parts in comma i.e. "de- pending on its mass" the resulting sentence is perfectly correct.
"After passing through a red giant stage, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole." the beginning modifier phrase correctly modifies a star.

similarly removing the first modifying phrase i.e. "After passing through a red giant stage" the resulting statement "de- pending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole." also makes perfect sentence with rightly placed modifier ""depending ..".

Also I think the subject in this sentence is star.

(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a star’s mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

wrong: "After passing through a red giant stage" is a modifier which should modify "star" and not "star's mass".

(D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

wrong: I don't find anything grammatically wrong in this sentence but what I was not very happy with the shift in focus to "star's Mass" , the original sentence had "star" as its main subject.

(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

wrong:with change in main subject there is a shift in focus which changes the meaning of the original sentence

Makumajon is on the way!
It has to be D. A present participle between two nouns is extremely dangerous.

I vote for D

Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

after passing modifies star correctly

A: it - Pronoun Refrence error ( Black -hole , star??)
C : uses conditional if
E : modifier error The mass of a star, after passing
B: its is ambigous

B- Its is ambious . refers to red gaint stage not Star.
D- I am not happy with starting part " Mass determines........

Not sure about the correct choice. But as a best option i pick "B"
