C has a better structure
The original sentence is wrong as is. The adverb "sharply" should come after "rise" SPLIT INFINITIVE This sentence employs a modifier : whatever follows the comma should modify the phrase before the comma. B is wrong - tense error D is too wordy E makes absolutely no sense C is grammatically correct OA???? |

I agree with you that A has split infinitive but what do you mean by the other statement - "This sentence employs a modifier : whatever follows the comma should modify the phrase before the comma" but it's not like that split infinitives are always wrong.. sometimes they are acceptable. moreover A satisfies the IF.. Then conditional clauses (can't we look at A from this perspective) |

i don't agree with you that "modifier rule" applies here.. these are just two independent clauses, a type of IF .. Then clauses . no conjunctions |

adverbs should modify verbs -- In A, sharply should follow the verb "rise"
The correct sentence would be "If present metal prices continue to rise sharply" but we're not given this option in the answer choices. Choice C is correct because it uses "sharp" as an adjective I NEVER SAID MODIFYING THE WHOLE CLAUSE |
